- Western Cape police are investigating the murders of two Mozambican nationals allegedly killed during anti-migrant violence in KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay.
- Five suspects have been arrested in connection with unrest in the area, although no arrests have yet been made for the murders.
- Police remain on high alert and have urged the public not to spread unverified information.
Western Cape police are investigating the murders of two Mozambican nationals who were allegedly killed during anti-migrant protests in KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay, last week.
The violence left a trail of destruction across parts of the town, with several informal structures set alight and scores of residents forced to flee their homes.
Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies said officers were called to the area in the early hours of Saturday morning after reports of violence.
Upon arrival, police discovered the body of a 27-year-old man who had sustained multiple injuries.
“Shortly thereafter, another man with assault injuries was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital. It was later determined that the two deceased men, aged 27 and 43, were of Mozambican descent. While investigations into the murders continue, no arrests have been effected yet,” said Spies.
Since the violence broke out, police have arrested five suspects.
Two suspects were charged with public violence and appeared in court on Monday, where they were granted bail of R1,000 each.
Three additional suspects are expected to appear before the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court soon on charges relating to the possession of presumed stolen property.
“When marchers or protesters engage in violent acts, including the incitement of violence, police will not hesitate to act decisively.
A further plea is made to community members and leaders to refrain from disseminating unverified information, as that causes unnecessary panic and anxiety,” added Spies.
Police deployments remain on high alert in Mossel Bay as authorities work to restore calm and maintain public order.
No further incidents have been reported in the area since Monday.
The killings have intensified concerns about violence linked to anti-migrant sentiment, with community leaders and civil society organisations calling for restraint, lawful protest action and the protection of all residents regardless of nationality.
