Pikitup services remain disrupted due to the casual workers strike which started last week and continues on Tuesday, 21 May.
Workers whose contracts are about to expire have halted services and are protesting forcefully, demanding jobs from the waste management company.
On Friday, 17 May Pikiup deployed the assistance of the Public Order Policing (POP) to remove protesters who were obstructing depots, in order for waste collection services to resume.
It is unclear when the protests will end, and there are currently 10 depots that are affected by the protest action.
According to Pikitup, the casual workers are protesting because they are demanding permanent positions.
The protesters, comprising Expanded Public Works Programme employees whose contracts are expiring and community members blocked entrances to 10 of the waste management company’s 12 depots.
Affected depots include:
- Norwood
- Selby
- Zondi
- Avalon
- Marlboro
- Randburg
- Midrand
- Roodepoort
- Waterval
- Central Camp
