Parliament says it will take another 2 years to rebuild the National Assembly precinct.
The institution will need to be restored in 24 months, according to the parliament, after a fire destroyed it in January.
Xolile George, the secretary to parliament, stated on Tuesday that work had already begun.
“It is envisaged that the Project will be completed within 24 months and allow a further 6 months for retention to deal with snags and challenges arising after occupation.” said George.
At the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement last year, Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana allocated R2 billion to the legislature for the reconstruction project.

George also said that there are talks and negotiations on the restoration project with all stakeholders.
He also said there will be a larger public gallery to accommodate members of the public in line with Parliament’s constitutional obligations of public involvement, more office spaces for MPs and committee rooms.
“It is therefore envisaged that, through this project, South Africa will have a new Chamber that fully serves the imperatives of our constitutional democracy”. – Secretary to Parliament Mr Xolile George briefing the media on the reconstruction process. #ParliamentFire pic.twitter.com/TiX9UDNzQs
