Over 900 more arrests have been made in all five districts of Gauteng due to Operation Shanela.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the full might of the law was in force over the weekend, from Friday to the early hours of Sunday morning.
As police continue to make inroads in the fight against crime and lawlessness, 908 suspects were arrested for a spate of crimes ranging from operating unlicensed taverns to those classified as trio crimes.
Charges include illegal mining, contravention of the Liquor Act, contravention of the Immigration Act, possession of unlicensed firearm, driving under the influence of liquor, rape and robberies.
According to police unlicensed taverns/shebeens are often a primary source of assaults, murders and robberies.
Three suspects, two in Tembisa and one in Tsakane, have been arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms. The latter one from Tsakane is under police guard in hospital, this after he and his accomplices allegedly shot at police as they tried to stop them.
In total 29 unlicensed taverns/shebeens were closed by Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, as he led Operation Shanela in the Sedibeng District last night.
All suspects arrested in the past weekends operations will appears in various local courts within the province this week.
