Over 70 people were injured in a horrific collision involving two buses outside the University of Johannesburg (UJ) campus in Auckland Park.
The collision occurred on Tuesday morning, 25 July on Kingsway Avenue in Rossmore, near the entrance to the UJ Auckland Park campus.
Emergency Medical Service responders from Emer-G-Med were called to the scene at approximately 08h00, after two buses collided with each other, causing one to overturn and the other to crash into the Rea Vaya pick-up point structure.
Spokesperson for Emer-G-Med, Kyle van Reenen said a total of 77 patients were treated for injuries sustained ranging from minor to serious.
“With the assistance of the Johannesburg Fire Department, several patients were extricated using specialized hydraulic equipment including the Jaws-of-life.
On-scene paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the injured before they were transported by ambulances to nearby hospitals for further medical care.”

No fatal injuries were reported, and some patients were transported to hospital for further treatment.
Speaking to eNCA, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the cause of the collision is unknown at this stage.
“A case of reckless and negligent driving will be opened at the nearest police station to determine what caused the collision.
There could be various aspects that contributed to the collision, poor visibility was reported this morning due to extremely misty conditions, so that could come into play, so we’re not ruling that out.
But there are other factors that need to be investigated, such as driver behaviour, or it could be the conditions of the roads or the conditions of the vehicles.
This will be determined in the investigation.”
