The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has apologised for the release of a statement titled “[Renowned Actress’ Son Appears in Court for Raping His Girlfriend]”, issued on Monday, 20 January 2025.
The NPA acknowledged that the wording of the statement failed to meet its usual standards of professionalism and integrity.
“It reflected poor judgment that was unfortunately allowed to slip through the standard quality control measures to which we subject our media statements,” read an official statement from the NPA.
“We sincerely and unreservedly apologise for any harm or distress caused, particularly to the mother indirectly referred to in the statement, and to all members of the public in general.”
The apology follows the court appearance of Sonia Mbele’s son, Donell Mbele (23), who was released on R1,000 bail on Monday at the Randburg Magistrates Court.
Donell faces two charges of rape after his girlfriend accused him of sexually assaulting her on the 14th and 15th of December 2024.
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane revealed that the alleged incidents took place at Donell’s residence in Morningside and that the case was opened at the Sandton Police Station.
