The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced the recall of 142 Volkswagen Polo vehicles and 8 Volkswagen Taigo vehicles due to a critical defect in the front passenger airbag system.
The recall, initiated by Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA), aims to address a faulty component that poses a significant safety risk to occupants.
The NCC statement reveals that the recall is prompted by a defect in the gas generators of the front passenger airbag module.
This fault could lead to a reduced protective effect of the airbag during an accident, increasing the risk of injury to the passenger. More alarmingly, the gas generator housing itself could burst, or components could detach, potentially causing serious or even fatal injuries.
The affected Polo vehicles, numbering 141, were made available for sale nationwide starting from December 20, 2022. An additional single Polo vehicle and all eight recalled Taigo vehicles entered the market from January 29, 2024.
The NCC has issued urgent advice to consumers owning these affected vehicles:
- Deactivate the front passenger airbag.
- Refrain from using the front passenger seat.
- Submit their vehicle to any VWSA approved dealer for an inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the faulty components.
Vehicle owners are strongly urged to adhere to the NCC’s recommendations to mitigate the risk of injury.
