Mzwandile Masina, the former mayor of Ekurhuleni, has won the preliminary election to lead the African National Congress (ANC) in the region.
At the Ekurhuleni regional conference on Sunday night, he received 163 votes out of 334 votes polled, defeating Doctor Xhakaza.

This will his third term as leader in the office.
Masina came out on top by a razor-thin margin in the election.
It could, however, change if ballots that were set aside due to disagreements are counted and the outcome is altered.
Nineteen ballots were quarantined and placed away.
Once the delegates’ participation disputes are addressed, these ballots will be counted.
