Both MTN and Vodacom networks in KwaZulu-Natal have been affected by the floods, making it difficult for people to reach out for help.
More than 500 MTN sites and 400 Vodacom sites in the province have been damaged in KZN so far.
MTN and Vodacom have assured customers technicians are working tirelessly to restore service. However, with the roads still heavily waterlogged, restoring connectivity to some sites may not be possible.
Areas affected by MTN’s outage include Durban South, South Coast, Umlazi, Amanzimtoti, Ballito, and Salt Rock.
Vodacom reports towers from the north to the south coast of Durban have been impacted, areas include Ballito to Amanzimtoti.
Apart from towers that have been flooded, areas where power outages have been reported cannot get back up because the back-up batteries have been depleted.
Fibre infrastructure has also been affected.
Desperate residents in flood-hit areas have tried to notify the network providers of the outages. Some South Africans stressed that they are unable to reach their families in KZN to check if they are safe.
Meanwhile, MTN said 28 sites were repaired last night and the Ballito tower is up and running.
