Mpho Phalatse may be safe for now, but the ANC Johannesburg is gunning for the mayor’s resignation following the successful removal of Vasco Da Gama.
Da Gama who was ousted as Speaker due to a motion of no confidence was replaced by Colleen Makhubele from COPE on Wednesday, 28 September.
Despite this Phalatse is confident that the coalition government in is stronger than ever. But this may soon be put to the test with a motion of no confidence against Phalatse set for the next council sitting.
Apart from the ANC calling for Phalatse’s resignation, Kenny Kunene from the Patriotic Alliance says the DA-led coalition government in Johannesburg is failing.
He said any attempts to address issues with Phalatse have fallen on deaf ears and it’s time for her to go.
These sentiments are shared by the ANC who have reportedly asked Phalatse to tender her resignation as City of Joburg mayor.
Speaking after the appointment of Makhubele, the ANC’s Sasabona Manganye said Phalatse is messing up the city and she is next in line.
“We’re coming back, the mayor who is messing up the city, she is next in line. We want to advise her not to waste our time so we do not have to do motion of no confidence. She must just resign. Theatrics and other political posturing for headlines do not serve the residents of Joburg.”
Recent developments show cracks in Phalatse’s coalition government, with 141 votes in favour of Makhubele as opposed to 129 votes for the DA’s Alex Christians.
