Residents of Mogale City have gathered signatures for a petition to the government to prevent illegal miners from operating near their houses.
Residents claim that mining operations are getting closer to their homes, putting their families at risk.
They want the City of Ekurhuleni and Parliament’s portfolio committees on Mineral Resources and Energy, Police, Home Affairs, and Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries to intervene right away.
According to the petition, illegal mining has crippled various districts in Mogale City, prompting the declaration of a disaster zone.
Illegal mining is a big source of concern for locals.
It is accompanied by massive tremors, explosions, and gunfights between competing gangs.

The petition also states that the national and provincial governments must urgently intervene:
- All three spheres of government must establish a committee to coordinate action plans to address this matter as an urgent need.
- State-owned enterprises, such as Rand-water, must protect their infrastructure.
- A commission of inquiry is needed to establish where the profits are being made along this illegal mining value chain.
