On Thursday Mexican authorities captured the son of jailed drug lord Joaquin Guzman, popularly known as El Chapo.
Ovidio Guzman who was arrested in the north western city of Culiacan is accused of leading a division of his fathers notorious Sinaloa Cartel.
It is alleged that Ovidio was running a drug trafficking operation since the arrest and extradition of his father to the USA in 2017.
Despite his arrest, a Mexico City federal judge has halted the extradition of Ovidio Guzman to the US on Friday, 6th January 2023.
The halt comes a day after he was arrested during an intense operation that led to the deaths of 29 people.
The USA is seeking Guzman’s extradition for drug trafficking and has offered a reward up to $5 million for information leading to the capture of Ovidio Guzman who many claimed to be “a senior member of the Sinaloa Cartel”.
Ovidio was previously arrested by federal authorities in October 2019, but was later released on the orders of Mexican President; Andrés Manuel López Obrador to avoid further bloodshed and turmoil.
The arrest of Ovidio Guzman comes days before United States President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visit Mexico City to attend the 2023 North American Leaders Summit.
