Medi Response Director Paul Herbst has died shortly after returning from search and rescue efforts in Turkey following the devastating earthquakes.
Herbst who was an instrumental part of the rescue team who went to Turkey under the banner of the Gift of the Givers had shared updates on the team’s rescue efforts daily.
According to Medi Response, the circumstances that the team faced in Turkey were dire, with rescue workers taking small periods of rest, dealing with limited resources of food and water.

“Team members are fatigues as a result of travel and adapting to local conditions. There is limited food and trying environmental conditions prevail. Members remain in good spirit and have worked through day and night, as they take turns resting for short periods.”
Herbst’s cause of death is unknown at this stage, and his passing is a huge blow to the medical fraternity.
In a statement, Medi Response confirmed Paul Herbst’s passing on Tuesday, 21 February.
“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Paul Herbst, director of Medi Response KwaZulu-Natal. On behalf of the entire team at Medi Response, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
Paul Herbst is remembered as a well-respected and dedicated leader in the field of emergency medical services.
He is known for his unwavering commitment and passion for helping others and this showed in his work every day.
“The loss of Paul is a tremendous blow to the community, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. As we mourn his passing, it’s important to remember the incredible contributions that he made and the countless lives he touched along the way.”
