Residents in Manenberg are living in fear as gang shootouts become a daily occurrence and police turn a blind eye.
On Thursday, 19 May, school pupils in Manenberg hid under their desks during a gang shootout.
A community leader confirmed that a bullet had hit one of the primary school’s classrooms.
This follows another shootout between rival gangs which has been ongoing since the shooting of gang leader, Zakier ‘Jonty’ Scheepers on Tuesday night.

There have been no reports of any casualties from the incident yet.
As reported by the Daily Voice, the alleged Hard Livings leader was shot whilst sitting in his car on Tuesday night.
Since then panic has spread in the Cape Flats community over who ordered the hit on him.
There is speculation that his shooting was orchestrated either by rival gang Clever Kids or someone within his own gang who does not want him as leader.
He took over from previous gang leader, Rashied Staggie who was killed.
Scheepers was shot in the chest, arm and leg.

There have been several mass shooting incidents in Cape Town, with the most recent being in Khayelitsha were 6 people were killed.
Community members choose not to come forward to speak out about the crime in the area out of fear.
Due to the heavy gang presence, many choose to turn a blind eye to avoid being victims themselves.
