Lyttelton police have apprehended three men following the discovery of a sophisticated counterfeit currency operation.
The arrests, made on Monday, 1 July 2025, unfolded after an observant undercover unit initiated an investigation at a local shopping centre.
The operation began when plainclothes officers noticed a man behaving suspiciously near ATMs.
A subsequent search of the individual revealed a quantity of fake banknotes concealed within his bag, interspersed with blank paper – a tactic often used to disguise larger stashes of counterfeit currency.
This initial lead quickly escalated, guiding investigators to a residential property believed to be the hub of the illegal enterprise. Inside the premises, law enforcement officials made a substantial discovery: additional counterfeit South African Rand and US Dollar notes, alongside a printing machine suspected of being used in the illicit production of the fake currency.
Two more suspects were taken into custody at this location.
The trio is now facing charges of possession and production of counterfeit money and is expected to appear in court. Authorities have indicated that further charges may be pursued as the ongoing investigation develops.
