A Gauteng Game Reserve has confirmed that an employee was attacked and killed by a lion on Monday night, 14 August.
Dinokeng Game Reserve, situated just 40-minutes from Pretoria, said the unfortunate incident was reported to police on Tuesday morning, 15 August, after the reserve’s fencing team found human remains.
The victim is said to be an employee of one of the landowners within the game reserve, who was attacked by the lion while walking the reserve at night.
Speaking to SA Trucker, Hartogh Streicher, spokesperson for the reserve said news of the man’s death leaked on social media after graphic images of his remains were shared.
Initial reports suggested the victim was a poacher, but Streicher clarified this wasn’t the case, saying the man was employed within the reserve.
Streicher says an investigation is ongoing and the reserve is seeking expert advice regarding the lion or lions involved in the attack.
The Gauteng game reserve’s management is proceeding cautiously, and will assess whether the lions have displayed unusually aggressive behaviour, which poses further risk.
Streicher said walking the reserve at night or any other time is strictly prohibited as per reserve regulations, emphasizing the untamed instincts of wild animals.
