A China-backed proposal has gotten a green light from the Limpopo Province to commence with a R150 billion project of building a 4 600 megawatt coal-fired power plant.
According to South Africa’s Trade, Industry and Competition ministry, the go-ahead was given on Wednesday and was backed by the establishment of the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone, in which a number of Chinese companies have pledged to invest.

Though the project has been approved at the provincial level, it might still not get the thumbs up at the national level.
Key things that still need to be ironed out are whether the project aligns with the country’s emissions targets as well as what this will mean for the areas’ water supplies and air pollution.
There are also growing concerns by environmental activists on how the construction will affect the surrounding area, as well as the long-term environmental impact.
