Although the murder rate has shown a marginal decrease between April 2024 and June 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, the 1st Quarter crime statistics paint a grim outlook.

The Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Mpumalanga are among the Top 5 provinces where murder rates remain high.

In total, there were 6 198 murders committed between April and June 2024, down by 30 from 6 228 during the same period in 2023.
The biggest cause of murders in South Africa were linked to arguments, misunderstandings, provocation and road rage.
Murders due to robberies, mob justice incidents and gang-related reasons are also high.
Gauteng, KZN and the Eastern Cape had the highest number of murders taking place in public areas, such as streets, open fields, recreational centres, parks, and parking areas.
