Illegal occupants at Glen Marikana Informal Settlement in Kempton Park, are being evicted from privately owned land that was invaded in 2016.
This after the DA Gauteng, residents from Glen Marais, Kempton Park and the landowner have been fighting to get the illegal occupants out of the area since November 2018.
The land belongs to the Jansen van Vuuren Beleggings (PTY) LTD, which has been placed under immense financial burden due to the illegal occupation.
Not only were the illegal occupants connecting electricity illegally, but due to there not being access to basic services, such as proper sanitation, and refuse removal, the area has been immensely polluted, and unsafe, resulting in the value of homes in the area decreasing.
An eviction order was granted in November 2018, but the City of Ekurhuleni didn’t manage to relocate the occupants before 31 March 2019.
This resulted in the eviction order being moved to February 2020, which could not be actioned due to the national lockdown which happened in March 2020.
The eviction process is currently underway, and the illegal occupants are being moved to Putfontein.
