Tourists at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park escaped an elephant attack and live to tell the tale. This after occupants of a Ford Figo were thrown into a ditch after encountering a bull elephant.
The driver of the Figo observed the elephant approaching his vehicle, and decided to move his car out of the elephant’s path.
Perhaps curious about the white vehicle, the elephant decided to rest its trunk on the car.
Out of panic the driver decided to try and reverse his car, which seemed to displease the now angry bull.
The animal stuck its tusks into the car’s windows, shattering them. With little effort the elephant picked the car up and proceeded to throw the vehicle into a ditch.
As is common when an elephant attacks, the huge bull continued to push and charge at the car, with the occupants inside.
It wasn’t until a field ranger from Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park fired a warning shot that the elephant eventually backed away and made off into the bushes.
Both driver and passenger of the car were assisted to remove their belongings from the vehicle. They were taken out of the park from an Ezemvelo Wildlife vehicle.
Acting CEO of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said it was fortunate that no lives were lost in the incident. He expressed his thanks to the field ranger for remaining calm and handling the situation without harming the elephant.
