Former Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan says President Ramaphosa’s Inauguration as leader of the Republic in a Government of National Unity (GNU) is important because it means putting the country and the people first.
“All the political parties in the GNU will be putting the interests of the country and the people first. What follows in the weeks to come will show us how this will work in the practical sense. How will service delivery to our people improve?
How will we improve the performance of local government for example? But I’m very optimistic, very hopeful.
The African National Congress (ANC) has navigated freedom for this country. From Mandela’s letter to PW Botha in 1986 to the post 1990 negotiations, and 30-years later, we do have democracy, our institutions do work and we need to safeguard them as we get into the future.
This is also a period we have to accommodate change because working with different political parties requires flexibilty, a spirit of compromise and requires all the political parties to give concrete meaning as to what it means to work for the country.”
