Two infants abducted from the Dora Nginza Hospital maternity ward in the Eastern Cape have been found, and two suspects are in custody.
The babies, snatched just yesterday, May 20, were recovered thanks to the swift action of a vigilant police officer.
The breakthrough came when a South African Police Service (SAPS) officer, leaving the hospital premises, noticed two women with infants. His immediate suspicion led him to approach the duo. Following an interrogation, it was confirmed that the babies were indeed the ones stolen the previous night.
Two female suspects, aged 25 and 26, were arrested by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit on charges of child stealing.
They are expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court later this week.
Community Relief and Police Commendation Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, praised the dedicated SAPS team for their tireless efforts since the kidnapping was reported.
“We are grateful that they were found and that they can be reunited with their mothers,” said Brigadier Ngalo, reflecting the widespread relief within the community.
