  • The Gauteng Department of Education is investigating allegations of sexual misconduct involving educators and pupils at a Soweto school.
  • The investigation follows a complaint by a Grade 11 pupil who alleged that an educator made an inappropriate sexual remark to her during the second term, with another learner providing a statement supporting the allegation.
  • The department says other concerns involving educators and pupils have also been raised and has vowed to protect learners while ensuring that allegations are properly investigated.

The Gauteng Department of Education is investigating allegations of sexual misconduct involving educators and pupils at the Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation in Emndeni, Soweto.

On Friday, 7 August 2026, the school principal reported a sexual harassment complaint involving an educator to the Johannesburg Central District Dispute Management Office and requested urgent intervention.

According to the school’s report, the complaint was formally brought to the principal’s attention on the same day.

The complaint relates to an allegation by a Grade 11 pupil, who claims that an educator made an inappropriate sexual remark to her during the second term.

A second learner, who said she was present during the interaction, submitted a statement that substantially supports the allegation.

The educator has denied making the alleged inappropriate remarks.

“The educator concerned has denied making inappropriate remarks to the pupil. His written statement records his denial of the allegation and provides his account of the subsequent engagement at the principal’s office,” the Gauteng Department of Education said in a statement.

The department says broader concerns have since been raised by pupil formations and members of the school community, with allegations that other educators may be implicated in separate incidents involving pupils at the school.

The department says it will investigate the allegations without prejudging the outcome.

“We will neither protect perpetrators nor prejudge allegations. Our responsibility is to protect learners, establish the truth and ensure accountability,” the department said.

The department added that every learner attending a Gauteng school should feel safe and have their dignity protected.

The investigation remains ongoing.

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose. 

    1.4. “Website” means the website of the KAYA 959 at URL www.kaya959.co.za or such other URL as KAYA 959 may choose from time to time.

    3.2.6. If personal information is released with your consent KAYA 959 will retain a record of the information released, the third party to which it was released, the reason for the release and the date of release, for a period of 1 (one) year from the date on which it was last used. 

    3.2.7. KAYA 959 will destroy or delete any personal information that is no longer needed by KAYA 959 for the purpose it was initially collected, or subsequently processed. 

    3.3. Note that, as permitted by the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002, KAYA 959 may use personal information collected to compile profiles for statistical purposes. No information contained in the profiles or statistics will be able to be linked to any specific user.
