The Gauteng Department of Health is on high alert following Rand Water’s planned infrastructure maintenance, which has led to water supply disruptions across several health facilities in the province.
The maintenance, currently underway at the Eikenhof, Zwartkopjes, and Palmiet pumping stations, is expected to continue until 21 July 2025.
Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says the department is working closely with local municipalities to implement contingency measures and minimise the impact on health services.
“Most of our health facilities are equipped with water tanks, boreholes, and reservoirs that can provide backup water for two to four days,” said Modiba.
Helen Joseph Hospital is already experiencing water supply interruptions affecting parts of the facility and surrounding communities. Johannesburg Water has dispatched tankers to pump water into the hospital’s tanks to ensure continuity of services.
Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital has also been affected due to disruptions at the Zwartkopjes water system, which has not pumped water to the Parktown 2 Reservoir since Tuesday, 1 July 2025.
“The facility is still receiving water through gravity feed from the reservoir, and tanks continue to be supplied for now. Alexandra CHC and Hillbrow CHC are also impacted and currently relying on Jojo tanks for water,” Modiba added.
