Lumko Johnson’s death has been confirmed by their family on Wednesday, 14 September.
The South African actor and producer was best known for their role as gay fashion designer, MJ in the telenovela Inkaba.
Lumko made an introduction into the entertainment industry as a teenager on SABC 1, as a YoTV presenter.
The Mthatha born personality was a much-loved advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community and had reshaped their gender identity.
Before their untimely passing, Lumko had entered a new phase and had transitioned as transgender.
At 32-years, the media producer and actor reshaped their gender identity in private with therapy and hormonal treatment. In a statement, Lumko “Johnson” Leqela’s family have called for privacy as they mourn their tragic loss.
“This is a gut-wrenching loss to the Leqela family, their loved ones, the LGBTQIA+ community and ultimately to the South African broadcast and television community.
Lumko lived a life filled with purpose and authenticity. As we process this shock as a community, let us remember their light in this world.”
The family will share details on Lumko Johnson’s memorial and funeral arrangements in due course.
