Eskom marks a milestone of 21 days (535 hours) without load shedding.
Eskom, the power company, says that while going 21 days without load shedding is a significant accomplishment, it is still dedicated to doing away with cyclical power outages completely.
Load shedding, which has left many South Africans frustrated is a prolonged period of widespread nationwide power outages. It started in the latter half of 2007—close to the conclusion of President Thabo Mbeki’s second term
Eskom marked at least 535 hours of uninterrupted power supply – something that last accomplished in nearly two years.
Eskom said that as of Wednesday, there were approximately 14 264 MW of unplanned power plant outages, while an additional 5 370 MW were unavailable because of scheduled maintenance.
“This is a result of sustained generation capacity, adequate emergency reserves, and reduced electricity demand from the grid. The last time Eskom achieved a similar milestone was in June 2022, with 20 consecutive days without load shedding.
“While Eskom acknowledges this milestone, it remains committed to the continued implementation of its Generation Operational Recovery Plan to reduce and ultimately eliminate load shedding,”
skom Power Station General Managers and their teams are working diligently to ensure the recovery of additional generating capacity by bringing units from unplanned outages and planned maintenance back into service as soon as possible.
“A total of 2 070MW of generating capacity is planned to be returned to service by Friday,”
