Enyobeni Tavern’s owners were sentenced to 100 days imprisonment or a R5 000 fine.
The East London Regional Court has sentenced Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu, the owners of the Enyobeni tavern, to either a fine of R5,000 or 100 days in prison.
They faced accusations of providing or selling liquor to individuals below the legal drinking age as well as charges of conspiring with and enabling agents and staff to sell or deliver liquor to underage customers.
This follows the tragedy that unfolded when 21 schoolchildren died in June 2022 during a “pens down” party, according to the government, suffocation from crowding was most likely the cause of death.
Magistrate Kevin von Bratt imposed the sentence on Friday.
