Policy consultant Mzwanele Manyi recently shared his views on employment equity and described it as fair discrimination.
A leaked memorandum in which Dis-Chem’s CEO Ivan Saltzman told management that the company decided to suspend the hiring of white staff fueled the comment.
The memorandum caused an outrage on social media to which Dis-Chem responded with an open message of regret to its staff and loyal customers.
“We acknowledge that it did not reflect our values. Its release did not follow our correct internal vetting processes and steps have been put in place to ensure that, going forward, relevant checks and balances are thoroughly duly performed.
Most importantly, we sincerely regret the offense and distress it caused to so many people, including our staff and millions of loyal customers.”
This however did not change their stance on their decision to suspend the hiring of white staff.
Manyi explained that companies are empowered to set employment targets in line with the economic active population.
All levels of the company must align with the economic active population.
Manyi says that the South African Constitution agrees with it if it is done within the confines of the law.
