23 kilograms of drugs concealed as molds for artwork were found this week in the cargo sheds of OR Tambo International Airport by South African Revenue Service customs officers. The drugs are estimated to have a street value of R37 million.
During their routine inspection rounds, the Customs officers discovered a box destined for New Zealand.
There were suspicious-looking pieces of molded artwork inside the box and the items tested positive for crystal meth, weighing 10 kg, and the officers used a narcotics test kit.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) found that a test on additional items revealed the presence of 13 kg of fentanyl. The drugs were turned over to the SAPS so they could conduct additional research.

Edward Kieswetter, the commissioner of SARS, commended the Customs officers for their diligence in finding the drugs.
“SARS Customs will spare no effort in stopping the export or import of narcotics and any illegal substance which cause so much pain and hardship for families, particularly their youth.
“Drug smugglers must know that our Customs Division is fully committed to this objective, and will act without fear or favour against those criminals involved in the drugs trade. They must know that they will face the full might of the law,”
