The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) department has confirmed that the death toll in the Margate floods has risen to 5.
Bongi Sithole-Moloi, MEC for KZN Cogta said teams were on-site assessing the damage to affected areas and actively engaging in mop-up operations.
This after heavy rains battered the KZN south coast on Sunday, 14 April causing flash floods that left a path of destruction.
In Margate CBD, businesses, roads and vehicles were damaged after an estimated 250mm of rain over 24-hours.
A level 5 warning for disruptive rain was issued and heavy rain is expected to persist until Wednesday, 17 April.
Six vehicles have been recovered so far, and 8 people were rescued after swells of water consumed the coastal town.

Adverse weather conditions has been affecting many parts of South Africa recently, and Cape Town was hit with a level 9 severe weather warning last week.
This after strong gale-force winds battered most of the province on Sunday, 07 April leaving a trail of destruction behind.
Most of the damages to properties in residential and business districts were caused by the strong winds, and a number of informal houses in Khayelitsha were also destroyed.
Videos of vehicles being blown over highway bridges were also shared across social media platforms.
