Community Work Program (CWP) employees who are aged 55 years and older have been let go by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).
They have received instructions not to return to work.
Social media users have accused the Department of discrimination after a memo of expulsion
According to the Department, the employees will have to stop reporting for work and receive their final paychecks in January 2025.
“In light of this situation, the Department regrettably has no other option but to reduce the number of participants in the Programme and a decision was taken to end the contracts of CWP participants aged fifty-five (55) years of age and older in order to prevent further unauthorized expenditure by the Department.”
