City Power will be rolling out smart meters, and resetting prepaid meters at no cost to customers across the City of Johannesburg.
In a bid to intensify its programme to audit prepaid customers, City Power says it’s crucial that all smart prepaid meters are Token Identifier (TID) compliant.
Most of the prepaid meters are not “smart meters” and the TID resetting entails every meter with old technology is replaced with new smart meters.
General Manager for Revenue Management at City Power, Thamsanqa Mathiso said the TID rollout targets prepaid customers and is meant to upgrade all prepaid customers before 24 November 2024.
“What is going to happen is that on 24 November, all prepaid meters will stop working if they are not upgraded. To avoid that your meter stops working, please allow us into your property so that we can upgrade your meter.
Our technicians will be going around from property to property to ensure that every house with a prepaid meter is fitted with a new smart meter.”
City Power said the smart meter rollout project also aims to address the ongoing energy crisis because loadshedding has had a huge impact on residents and businesses in Johannesburg and the rest of the country.
The new smart meters will, in addition, assist City Power and its customers in reducing electricity consumption, by means of a remote load-limiting function, which will contribute to managing the reduction of loadshedding.
City Power authorised agents will be visiting customers’ residential homes in phases across Johannesburg and will be easily identifiable, wearing yellow TID branded bibs or T-shirts. They will all carry valid ID cards with their ID photo, name and surname, and expiry date.
The drive will consist of 200 City Power authorised agents going house to house to audit meters in order to reach the daily target of 4,000 households.
