Charges have been withdrawn against Motanyane John Masukela, a former G4S employee who was on duty when convicted murderer Thabo Bester allegedly faked his own death to escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre.
Masukela, who was identified as accused number 5, appeared in the Bloemfontein High Court on Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing alongside Bester, his co-accused Nandipha Magudumana, and seven others.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Advocate Amanda Bester announced the decision to withdraw the charges against Masukela.
“I am going to withdraw the case against one of the accused. We can excuse him and he can go in peace,” stated Advocate Bester, though no specific reason for the withdrawal was provided.
Neither the defense nor the court raised any objections, and Masukela was subsequently excused from further proceedings.
This development follows a similar decision in October 2023, when charges against three other G4S personnel were also withdrawn.
Thabo Bester and the remaining co-accused continue to face a range of serious charges, including aiding an escape, defeating the ends of justice, fraud, corruption, and the violation of a corpse.
The high-profile case has been postponed to September 19.
