The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) have confirmed that five passengers were killed after a car plunged off a Germiston bridge.
Only one of the occupants, an 18-year old male, survived with slight injuries, and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The other 5 occupants between the ages of 18 and 20-years were declared dead on scene.
According to the EMPD, the Toyota Etios the young men were travelling in burst into flames after plunging off the bridge. The tragic accident occurred on Sunday, 25 June on Main Reef Road, corner Croxley Street in the Heriotdale area, Germiston.
“On Sunday, 25 June, the driver of a maroon Toyota Etios lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off a bridge.
The vehicle unfortunately caught fire and only an 18-year old male with slight injuries survived the accident.”
Police say a case of culpable homicide will be investigated.
