A private bus transporting 20 learners from Letsatsing Secondary School exploded at Unit 9 in Mmabatho near Mahikeng on Saturday, 16 July 2022.
The learners attended winter camp classes held at Mosikare Secondary School in Mantsha Village.
On their way back home, while dropping off some learners around Mmabatho, the bus exploded.
Luckily there were no injuries reported.
Speaking on behalf of the North West Department of Education, MEC for Education, Mmaphefo Matsemela. says she is “truly grateful that there were no injuries reported.”
She explains that the “purpose of these Winter Camps is primarily to improve the performance of our learners.”
The MEC calls upon all bus operators “to be extremely vigilant whenever they are transporting learners.”
She added: “They should ensure that their busses are road worthy and they comply with the rules of the road.”
The department has arranged counseling for all the affected learners.
Speaking to Kaya 959 this morning, Departmental Spokesperson Elias Malindi says ‘the cause of the explosion has not yet been established” and they are still investigating the matter.”
