Transport month is almost over and as part of the continuing series, we’re sharing back-to-basics road safety tips.
Before the road trip happens there is planning involved which rarely includes the practical inclusions of a driver’s license or looking at the route ahead of the journey. These are usually steps taken for granted because we expect to have our driver’s license in a wallet and that the GPS will just automatically offer the best possible route.
Planning the journey
- Make sure you have your driver’s license.
- Make sure that the GPS journey remains on major roads, or if you’re using back roads, make sure you know the towns.
- Plan routes that have petrol stations so you can easily top up when needed.
- Rest well before the journey
Vehicle Roadworthiness
- Make sure all of the following is in working order: lights and indicators, windscreen wipers, brakes, steering, exhaust system, and tyre.
Driver fitness
- Take a break every 2 hours or every 200kms
- Don’t drink and drive
- Wear a seatbelt
- Children under 12 should travel in the back seat and must use a seatbelt.
- Infants up to the age of 1 years old should use a rear facing infant car seat.
These are just a few important safety tips that drivers should follow to keep safe on the road.
Remember to think for others by remaining alert and driving defensively.
