The use of Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has recently exploded in popularity. From music to digital content, and now art, NFTs are undoubtedly becoming one of the fastest rising crypto-currency concepts to be created.
Jumping on the NFT bandwagon, the eldest daughter of former president Nelson Mandela, Makaziwe Mandela has partnered with London-based auction house, Bonhams, and NFT platform Nifty Gateway to launch limited NFT artworks by Nelson Mandela.
“NFT’s are an exciting way to democratise art, and I’m delighted to share my father’s legacy in new forms”, says Makaziwe.
The NFT edition titled, My Robben Island, consists of five colour drawings and one handwritten text, titled The Motivation by Nelson Mandela.
All artworks bear the signature of Nelson Mandela.
The NFT collection is inspired by the former president’s 18-yearlong incarceration on Robben Island.
During his time on Robben Island, Nelson Mandela produced a series of artworks depicting his time spent there.
The artworks and handwritten letter were minted and sold as an NFT on the 9th of March 2022, by the auction house Bonhams.
Artworks are to be sold at $699 (R 10 610,82) each and at $3,495 ( R53 054,1) for the full set.
People who buy the five images will automatically receive the Motivation, completing the full set of six.
