Staff claim cash-strapped ANC hasn’t paid salaries for two months and are now threatening a total shutdown.
Staging a protest outside Luthuli House on Monday, 19 September, disgruntled workers held up signs that read, “we are hungry.”
ANC staff are calling for answers from treasurer general Paul Mashatile, after promises were made by the party to pay staff on time.
This comes as the ruling party was forced to adhere to a R10 million monthly payment towards the ANC staff provident fund.
The ANC owes more than R80 million in overdue staff Provident Fund contributions, and last month the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) ordered the ruling party to meet the above terms.
Now, staff say they risk losing their homes and cars, while their children’s school fees goes unpaid and they face another month without food.
All while the ANC proposes a R50 million budget for its December conference.
In June, ANC staff members downed tools, saying the party had defaulted on salary payments from 2019.
Staff say they are awaiting feedback which will then inform their way forward but have made it clear that unless their salaries are paid, a total shutdown is on the cards.
According to reports, the ANC hasn’t paid staff provident fund or medical aid contributions either.
The latest from the party is that staff will receive their salaries in the coming weeks, depending on the outcome of donor engagements.
