- Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has urged SAPS members to use their tools of trade when under attack.
- His call follows the killing of two police officers in Roodepoort while transporting an armed robbery suspect.
- POPCRU is calling for urgent reviews of prisoner transport protocols to better protect officers.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has called on members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to make full and appropriate use of their tools of trade when they come under attack.
Cachalia’s remarks come after the brutal murder of two police officers in Roodepoort on Friday.
The officers were transporting a suspect, Thabang Jabulani Moyo, back to Boksburg Prison after his appearance in the Roodepoort court for armed robbery.
While stopped at a garage, one officer was allegedly shot inside the vehicle and later died in the hospital. The second officer was caught in the crossfire and also lost his life. The suspect was captured on video fleeing the scene.
“These senseless acts of violence against our men and women in blue are an attack on the rule of law and on the safety of all South Africans,” Cachalia said.
We strongly condemn these heinous crimes, and we will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice.
We call on all SAPS members to remain alert at all times and to make full and appropriate use of the tools of trade issued to them.
Meanwhile, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) in Gauteng has called for an urgent review of prisoner transport protocols.
POPCRU states that prisoners must be properly restrained during transit and that officers should be provided with adequate backup.
Provincial secretary Lerata Motsiri described the killings as an attack on law enforcement and public safety, saying they underscored the extreme risks police face daily and the urgent need for stronger protective measures.
Cachalia visited the families of the slain officers, assuring them that Moyo will be held accountable for his actions.
