- CEO Themba Matlou warned that failure to complete mandatory status reviews will lead to the immediate suspension and eventual lapsing of grants.
- The initiative aims to clean up the system, ensuring public funds are protected from misuse and directed solely to those who genuinely qualify.
- Grants are not canceled immediately; the agency provides a legislated window for beneficiaries to cooperate before any permanent action is taken.
For millions of South Africans, a monthly social grant is more than just a payment it is a lifeline that puts food on the table and keep the lights on.
However, that security is currently at risk for those who haven’t kept their paperwork up to date.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued an urgent plea to beneficiaries: review your status now, or face a total suspension of your funds.
Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, SASSA CEO Themba Matlou framed the review process as a balance between compassion and accountability.
He stressed that the agency’s goal isn’t to take money away from the vulnerable, but to ensure the system’s integrity.
“Reviews are necessary to keep beneficiary records accurate and up-to-date,” Matlou explained, noting that accurate data is the best defense against fraud.
Matlou emphasised that no qualifying individual should be unfairly disadvantaged, yet the agency cannot continue payments into the void.
If a recipient ignores the call for a review within the legal timeframe, the system automatically triggers a suspension. If the individual still doesn’t come forward, the grant “lapses” meaning it disappears entirely.
To avoid the heartbreak of an empty bank account on payment day, SASSA is urging all recipients to be proactive.
Beneficiaries are encouraged to cooperate immediately when requested for a review, ensuring their records reflect their current life circumstances.
