Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) has confirmed a 9-month old baby has died in a creche on his first day.
RUSA says the baby boy was found unresponsive at the creche in Zwelisha, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, 18 July.
The baby was pronounced dead in the afternoon at approximately 16h00, after a caregiver at the facility reportedly discovered the infant unresponsive in a bed.
RUSA medics arrived to find the baby naked but wrapped in a blanket. Medics examined the baby but with no signs of life, the baby’s body was then wrapped in a blanket.
According to the creche’s owner, it was the baby’s first day at her facility, having just been enrolled on Tuesday morning. The owner claims the baby fell asleep while being fed lunch.
Caregivers found the baby unresponsive about 4-hours later when they conducted a wellness check.
A cause of death hasn’t been established yet, and an investigation will be underway.
