Two brands of bakkies, and SUVs are among the Top 4 most targeted vehicles in South Africa, with an alarming spike in hijackings marking these models as high-risk.
According to Old Mutual Insure, more than 400 high-end vehicles were stolen in 2022, with the majority being Toyota luxury vehicles and the Ford Ranger.
One of the major concern for some of these vehicles is the keyless entry feature where criminals use relay devices to gain entry into the vehicle and use the keyless start functionality.
4 most targeted vehicles in South Africa
The trend is where these vehicles are being targeted at shopping malls, schools, and religious events. Many of these vehicles are stolen and moved across the border before they can be recovered.
If your high-end vehicle has electronic features or additional security systems, it’s necessary to take precautions so that you don’t become an easy target for criminal syndicates.
The 4 most targeted vehicles are:
- Ford Ranger
- Toyota Hilux
- Fortuner
- Toyota GD6 range
Among the areas that are considered high-risk areas for hijackings and stolen vehicles are, Pretoria, Honeydew, Krugersdorp and Boksburg.
