14 662 candidates nominated to contest the 887 seats in the National Assembly and the nine legislatures.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that a total of 14 662 candidates have been nominated to contest the 887 seats available in the National Assembly and the nine legislatures.
The lists containing the names of independent and political party candidates will be available for examination at the Electoral Commission’s (IEC) national office, all nine of its provincial offices, and local municipal offices today and tomorrow between 09:00 and 17:00.
Parties planning to run for office had until Monday at 17:00 to make changes to their lists and notify the commission of any nominees they had that were already on another party’s list or that were submitted as independents.
The breakdown of the candidates is as follows:
- 4 323 candidates have been nominated to contest the compensatory seats in the National Assembly (contested by parties only),
- 3 596 candidates have been nominated to contest the regional seats in the National Assembly (contested by party candidates and independents) and
- 6 743 candidates have been nominated to contested seats in the provincial legislatures (contested by party candidates and independents).
The IEC has invited political parties and the public to view the list and raise objections against candidates.
“The focus in the evolving candidate nomination process shifts to a period within which interested persons may inspect the lists of candidates and raise objections against candidates.
“To this end, the Commission will today and tomorrow, between 09:00 and 17:00 make the lists with the names of independent and political party candidates available for inspection at its national office, and in all its nine provincial offices and in local municipal offices.
“Copies of the documents accompanying the lists are available for inspection at the commission’s national office between 09:00 and 17:00,”

The biggest ballot paper will contain 56 contestants.
According to the IEC, There are going to be 56 contenders on the largest ballot. This is the ballot for the National Assembly’s compensatory seats. With 40 political parties and two independent candidates, the Gauteng area will have the largest ballot for the regional election.
Gauteng will have the largest ballot for the provincial legislature elections, featuring 42 political parties and 2 independent candidates.
Six independent candidates are running for the province legislature and seven independent candidates running for the regional elections. With three candidates, the Limpopo region has the most independent candidates overall.
