The Easter weekend is upon us and health officials have warned that there might be a surge in COVID-19 infections around the period.
As a result, the National Coronavirus Command Council is expected to meet today to discuss whether stricter regulations are needed for the Easter weekend.
Government is concerned that church gatherings could turn into super-spreader events. Normally, a lot of churches gather for their conferences around this period. The Zion Christian Church hosts over a million people at its annual Easter gathering.
However, with the current COVID-19 regulations, the maximum number of people allowed at any gathering is 100 people indoors or 250 people outdoors.
Last month, police arrested Pastor Mukhuba of Unity Fellowship Church for contravening the Disaster Management Act. She reportedly hosted more than the allowed number of people under lockdown level 1.
According to the latest figures – 548 new cases were recorded in the last day, bringing the total number of cases to over 1.5-million.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the country’s current position may need to be re-examined.
