National Orders 2019
The South African National Orders are given to South African citizens whose work has greatly impacted the Republic. Whether their impact is local or global, the recipients are honoured for their tireless work. The National Orders are given across six categories, namely: Order of Mendi, Order of Ikhamanga, Order of Baobab, Order of Luthuli, Order of Mapungubwe and Order of Companions of O.R. Tambo
Addressing the National Orders 2019 honourees president Ramaphosa said, “You have gained recognition for your dedication to personal, professional and other improvement; to putting yourselves at the service of your country; and for your willingness to do your part to make South Africa a better place.”
The Order of Mendi is awarded for bravery. This award is awarded in gold and silver to South Africans who, anywhere in their world, placed their lives in danger trying to save another.

Silver: Thapelo Tambani who saved a drowning friend but lost his life in the incident.
The Order of Ikhamanga is awarded to South Africans whose work in sport, the arts, literature, music and journalism is excellent and has moved the culture forward.

Gold: Johaar Mosaval
Silver: Achmat Davids (Posthumous); Benjamin Pogrund; Jacques Kallis; Yvonne Chaka Chaka Mhinga; Nomhle Nkonyeni; Mathatha Tsedu and Mary Mhlongo Twala.

The Order of the Boabab is awarded for innovation in technology, business, medicine, economics and science. This award also prizes community service and those South Africans who give back.

Silver: William Smith, Braam Jordaan; Constance Mirriam Thokozile Koza (Posthumous); Bongani Donald Mkhwanazi (Posthumous); and Ray and Dora Phillips (Posthumous)
The Order of Luthuli is given to individuals who’ve worked in conflict resolution, human rights, nation-building justice and have been active in the struggle for democracy.

Silver: Velaphi Msane; Thandi Lujabe-Rankoe; Antony Andrew Trew; Moyisile Douglas Tyutyu and Yosuf (Joe) Veriava.
The Order of Mapungubwe is awarded to South Africans whose work has, over the years, shone a positive light on South Africa.

Gold: Minister Bomo Edna Edith Molewa (Posthumous) for contribution to the fight against climate change.
Bronze: Thokozani Majozi; Malik Maaza and Ari Sitas.
The Order of Companions of O.R. Tambo is awarded in gold, silver and bronze to South African citizens who’ve contributed to promoting the aspirations of the country and have been cooperative and supportive of these aspirations.

Gold:
His Excellency Admiral Didier Ignace Ratsiraka (Madagascar): For his outstanding contribution to the struggle for democracy in South Africa.
Silver: Klaas de Jonge (The Netherlands); Khotso Makhulu (United Kingdom); Paulette Pierson-Mathy (Belgium); Amii Omara-Otunnu (Uganda) and Lucia Raadschelders – posthumous (The Netherlands).
Bronze: Riccardo Sarra (Italy): For his consistent contribution to the fight for the liberation of the people of South Africa and the Southern African region.
