The Mpumalanga Department of Education has condemned the bullying incident which occurred on Friday afternoon.
In a video clip that was shared of the incident on social media a 15-year old girl was assaulted several times whilst other learners watched.
The assault involved another girl who only stopped assaulting her peer after another learner intervened.
Since the incident other learners from Elukhanyisweni Secondary School at Emalahleni have spoken out about being scared.
They say the bullying incident started on social media as cyberbullying and then escalated.
In an attempt to curb further bullying at the school, the Mpumalanga Department has directed the school governing body to bring all learners involved to book.
The department will ensure the victim receives counselling and will extend this to other learners who may have been affected.
The Department of Social Development has embarked on a project to address bullying in schools.
Last year, 15-year old Lufuno Mavhungo committed suicide after being bullied. The Limpopo schoolgirl brought to light the severity of bullying in schools and the long-lasting effects it has on victims.
Many are calling for a helpful, age-appropriate and user-friendly anti-bullying measure to be implemented across all schools in the country as a matter of urgency.
