Twelve suspected illegal miners were arrested and unlicensed guns seized during an operation in Krugersdorp.
Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubele, said the suspects were shooting amongst themselves and when police responded, they started shooting at police who returned fire.
“One suspect was shot and injured and was taken to hospital under police guard. The other suspects surrendered and two unlicensed firearms were recovered.
“This brings to a total of 1470 suspects arrested by police in Gauteng over the weekend,” he said.
Wanted suspects arrested
Police in Ekurhuleni District conducted an integrated operation where 447 suspects were arrested during operations and raiding of wanted suspects in the district for various crimes.
“More than 350 suspects were arrested in West Rand and Sedibeng for crimes ranging from attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm, dealing in drugs, driving while under the influence of alcohol and assault,” Makhubele said.
Operation O Kae Molao led by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko and Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, was conducted in Alexandra at the weekend, where more than 44 suspects were arrested for crimes that include possession of suspected stolen property, possession of drugs, possession of unlicensed firearm and driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Makhubele said 186 other suspects were arrested in Johannesburg District.

More arrests in Tshwane District
Meanwhile in Tshwane District 496 suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle, possession of suspected stolen property, malicious damage to property, car hijacking, kidnapping, fraud, attempted murder, driving while under the influence of alcohol among other crimes.
The suspects are due in court soon.
In Polokwane, police arrested 5 men, aged between 27 and 44, for allegedly impersonating cops.
“Police received a tip-off about the suspects who were masquerading as police officers at a local tavern and one of them armed with a firearm and wearing a police reflector jacket. They swiftly responded and five suspects were cornered and arrested while trying to flee from the scene in a VW Polo,” said SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi.

Seabi said police searched the vehicle and confiscated one SAPS bullet proof vest, one SAPS summer pair of trousers, two Constable rank structures, one police belt, 9mm pistol, one magazine, 08 rifle live ammunition, one reflector jacket and a motor vehicle.
“The suspects will still be profiled to determine if they were previously involved in any other crimes. The origin of the recovered items will also be revealed by the ongoing police investigations,” Seabi said.
The suspects will appear in Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court today ((TUES)) on charges of impersonating police officers, possession of unlawful firearm and ammunition, driving under the influence of liquor and possession of suspected stolen properties.
Police investigations are continuing.
