A vibrant celebration of the food, music, and family – the quintessential South African Sunday lunch
Marble, South Africa’s leading live-fire restaurant located in Johannesburg, is launching a new Sunday lunch theme – 7 Colour Sundays. In partnership with Kaya 959, home of the Afropolitan, the weekly lunches will be a celebration of food, music, and family. The first event, themed “Ruby & Rose” will take place on Sunday, 23 February 2020.
“In my culture, Sunday’s were more than just about food, it was a day of generational exchange. That’s when I learnt about music and how to cook because we had time on Sundays to experience it all together. It’s a religious day for most and all these different elements are what we’d like to reignite for the next generation,” says MD of Kaya 959, Greg Maloka.
Colloquially known as “7 Colours” among South Africans, the name is derived from the number of different colours on your plate. Marble’s 7 Colour Sunday lunches, conceptualized by Greg and Marble’s owners – Chef David Higgs and Gary Kyriacou – (ironically, over Sunday lunch…) will see the two entities collaborate in this space for the first time. Every Sunday, one of the seven colours will dominate the décor and cocktails in Marble; a special edition menu will be available, and Kaya 959 will provide live entertainment in the bar.
“We’ve had a long-standing friendship with Kaya 959 since we opened in 2016, and now we’re like family,” David explains. “It’s incredible to be able to delve into South African culture, and really elevate our country’s favourite foods and take Sunday lunch to new levels.”
“This is a great way to hero certain ingredients and explore the depths of colour in food, music, décor and dress code,” adds David. “7 colours allows us to explore different and colourful ingredients – meat, vegetables and beautiful breads.”

The special edition menu, which will change regularly, will be available each Sunday and will feature traditional dishes made with a Marble touch. Picture vegetables cooked on the fire and lamb shoulders slow roasted in the Josper and pizza ovens
“The sonic expression of 7 colour Sundays at Marble will be a colourful blend of music that traverses generations, from the popular sounds of Glen Miller to the soulful voice of Marvin Gaye, a touch of Sting, Simply Red, Aretha Franklin, Soul to Soul, Bra Hugh, 2 Tons of fun, Zoe Modiga and a whole lot more,” concludes Maloka.
7 Colour Sunday lunch will be served from 12h00 and Kaya 959 will be entertaining in the bar from 16h00 to 20h00. Bookings are essential.
