Netflix has revealed that two times Emmy Award nominee Loyiso Gola will be the first African to have a one-hour full-length original special on the streaming network with his comedy special, Loyiso Gola: Unlearning.

Loyiso Gola’s coming comedy special will also be the first African stand-up original on Netflix for 2021. Other African and South African comedians have specials on the service. They are, however, either ensemble series, short formats, or licensed from other networks.
Loyiso Gola’s rise in Comedy
Gola has become a household name in South Africa’s comedy circles, with many having first encountered him on the much loved South African classic, The Pure Monate Show. This was followed by his satirical news TV series, Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola, which launched in 2010 and ran for 12 seasons.
He also later became the African correspondent for The Weekly with Charlie Pickering on ABC in Australia. His search for new global audiences didn’t stop there. Gola has performed to alarge audiences in Edinburg, Montreal, London and New York and was previously been part of the Netflix special Comedians of the World, released in 2019.
Comedy during a pandemic
Many comedian worldwide have agreed that 2020 was the hardest year of their careers. People’s fear of going out in public affected many live shows. Loyiso Gola: Unlearning was filmed during the height of the pandemic, in front of a live audience at the Zietz MOCCA in Cape Town, with strict COVID-19 protocols and social distancing adherence.
