In one of the biggest fixtures of the season, Liverpool humiliated Manchester United at Old Trafford in a thrilling 5-0 victory.
Getting off the mark within 5 minutes, the Reds were on a rampage, netting 5 impressive goals. Reds’ frontman and highest African goal scorer in Premier League history, Mohammad Salah sealed the win with a hat-trick.
The rivalry between the two-most decorated clubs in English Premier League history is one the world stops to watch. Liverpool’s ruthless performance against the Red Devils highlighted the massive defensive flaws and tactical errors in United’s gameplay.
Within 13 minutes, Liverpool were already 2-0 up with goals by Naby Keïta (5) and Diego Jota (13). By half-time 2 goals by Salah took the Reds’ lead to 4-0.
Hungry for more, Salah scored his third goal in the 50th minute sealing Liverpool’s undefeated run.
The last time Liverpool clashed with United was on 13 May which they won 4-2.
United’s latest defeat raises concerns over Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future at the club.
A poor defensive display by the home-side and a red card against Paul Pogba have fans putting pressure on the club to dismiss Solskjaer. United have lost 3 of their last 5 games and are currently 7th on the table.
Speaking at the post-match conference Solskjaer said, “”I do believe in myself. I do believe that I’m getting close to what I want with the club. I think what we’ve done, what I’ve seen, the development. Of course, the results lately haven’t been good enough, I have to say, and that’s… hands up. And that brings doubt in anyone’s mind, probably. But I’ve got to keep strong and I do believe in what we’ve been doing.”
United’s No.7, Christiano Ronaldo offered nothing in the head-to-head clash and displayed poor sportsmanship in a physical clash with Liverpool’s Curtis Jones.
A visibly aggressive Ronaldo took Jones down in a high tackle and kicked at the ball against the Liverpool midfielder. The encounter angered Red’s defender Virgil Van Dijk who chested Ronaldo out of the way.
The Reds take on Preston on Wednesday night in their next Round of 16 fixture in UEFA Champions League.
